Prom is often considered a big deal for upperclassmen. Leading up to the night of the dance, there is one constant question: “what am I going to wear to prom?” The trending styles are constantly shifting and evolving from simple ‘Easter dresses’ to extravagant styles. Due to the ever-changing trends, many dresses are used only once. Also, prom dresses are known to be expensive so many resort to ordering from fast fashion websites. More times than not, the cheap quality dress ends up in the trash. In addition, the dress often comes in single-use plastic packaging which adds to landfill waste. As a result, the environment is negatively impacted. Even if others choose to not support fast fashion websites, popular materials such as silk or tulle are found in many prom dresses, even the costly ones. These materials are not biodegradable and are toxic to the environment. This leads to the question “how can I find an environmentally friendly dress?” Some solutions could be renting a prom dress from a website such as Nuuly, buying second hand, or borrowing from a friend. Another option would be buying from an environmentally sustainable prom dress website. Reformation is a clothing website that creates sustainable clothing pieces. The website sells dresses as well that can be used as prom dresses. In the end reducing your carbon footprint makes a positive impact on the environment and finding a sustainable prom dress is one way to reduce it.
