Although nothing is certain when it comes to Cincinnati weather, it is safe to say that spring has officially arrived.
For some people, spring means warmer weather, new clothes, and flowers blooming. For others however, spring means itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and a lot of sneezing.
I, like many others, suffer from springtime allergies. There is little I wouldn’t try to get rid of my stuffy nose and itchy eyes. For those that have to deal with annoying allergies like myself, try these methods to relieve the symptoms.
- Capsaicin– Capsaicin comes from chili peppers and is used in many spicy foods. It can act as a pain reliever (although not for your mouth when you eat it). Capsaicin can also clear up nasal airways and reduce congestion.
- Peppermint tea– Not only does peppermint tea have a wonderful aroma, but it has also been used as a nasal decongestion remedy for centuries. The peppermint contains anti-immflamatory and mild antibacterial substances.
- Face steaming- This may sound slightly strange, and even a little bit painful. Just simply boil several cups of water, pour the water into a bowl, and carefully lean over it with a towel draped over your head. Breathing the steam will soothe and refresh your sinuses and helps to rid nasal passages of mucus.
- Wasabi– This is the method for all sushi lovers. Eating a dollop of wasabi will almost instantly clear sinuses. That is because wasabi contains allyl isothiocyanate, which promotes the flow of mucus.
- Cucumbers– Chilled slices of cucumber placed over each eye is great for reducing itchiness. Cucumbers contain substances with anti-irritation properties that reduce inflammation, puffiness, and other irritation.
- Rosewater– This is one of the most effective methods to reduce discomfort. Pouring 4 or 5 drops of rosewater in each eye can be more effective than many medicated eye drops.
*Always take caution before trying these methods.
Although these are effective ways to relieve allergy symptoms, the best way to avoid discomfort is being aware of the weather and pollen levels before leaving home.
