Varsity football looks to rebound

Back in the early fall, the Varsity football team came into the 2013 season one of the best teams in the GMC. They had one of the best—if not the best quarterback, in the whole conference.

The stage was set for potentially one of the greatest seasons SHS has ever had. The season started off with a win against Walnut Hills 41 to seven. During the game, the railing collapsed sending some students to the hospital.

“I happen to be there that night, it was probably one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed,” said Kashef Malik, 11.

At the time, the team morale was extremely high; they ripped off four straight wins. They beat Ryle, Springfield, and Middletown. They blew their opponents out by a margin of at least 20 points in those games.

On Sept. 27, 2013, the team traveled to Lakota West in a pivotal week five matchup against the Fire hawks. SHS and Lakota West went back and forth the whole entire game. The score was knotted up at 14 at the end of the fourth quarter.

“Unfortunately, I could not make it to the game but I followed the whole game on Twitter,” said Adam Dock, 11.

The game was headed to overtime and in the end, the home team prevailed giving the Fire Hawks a 21 to 20 victory over SHS.

SHS bounced back the following week with a 42 to 20 victory over Hamilton. This set the scene for a crucial match up against undefeated Colerain in week seven.

SHS traveled to Colerain’s stadium with a chip on their shoulder. They wanted to beat the #1 team in the GMC. SHS lost by a final score of 40 to 22.

Following that loss, SHS lost the next two games. They lost to Fairfield and Lakota West dropping their record to five and four.

In the final game of the season, SHS played in their “Battle of the Skies” game against rival Mason. SHS held on to win 35 to 28 and finished the season with a six and four record and missed  the playoffs for the first time in the last three years.

This upcoming season has SHS eager to get back to the playoffs. Their first game of the season is at Walnut Hills on Aug. 29.

“I am really excited to see what the team has in store for next year. Hopefully, they will come out on fire and make it to the playoffs,” said Nicholas Wade, 9.
