Olivia Paguirigan, Staff Writer

Hello! My name is Olivia Paguirigan, I am a freshman and this is my first year of being a part of the staff on The Leaf. I would very much like to further increase my skills in writing as it seems that I have only hit the surface as to what good writing looks like. Through this experience, I not only want to grow in my knowledge as a writer but also as a team member. I think that through this class I will begin to grow my abilities to collaborate with others and openly express my ideas, which I believe are very important skills to have in life.

I have been writing ever since I was an elementary student and was extremely eager to join this class.  One of the things that really sparked my interest and passion in writing was in the year 2014, when I won a writing contest in the Montgomery Women’s Club. I had written a short story on what it was like to have cerebral palsy. A teacher of mine had sent it to the Southwest Ohio district competition where it won, and then after that occasion, it was sent to the state Ohio federation of Women’s clubs, where it won once again. After this, it was then sent nationally to the General Federation of Women’s Clubs where it also won.

This was the first time in the 62 year history of the Cincinnati Women’s Club that a short story won both state and national. Winning this award was really encouraging to me, and ever since then I have been pursuing writing. In addition, I love to read; itis one of my favorite pastimes. When I am older, I would like to study law and become a civil rights lawyer so I can advocate for those who do not have a voice in our society and get justice for those who have been viciously murdered at the corrupt hands of the law. I genuinely appreciate you for reading this!
