Celebrating after the game-winning goal, the Boys Varsity Soccer team surrounds teammate and senior Yuan Zhang. The team is now 5-1 and takes on Mason at home on Thurs. Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.

Yuan Zhang. His name was a trending hashtag on Twitter last night. His teammates yelled out his name and clapped his back in the hallways between bells. The video of his game-winning goal was watched by both teachers and students in the classroom.

“The best way I can describe the goal is unreal. The ball was only in the air for three seconds, but it felt so much longer. I just ran away screaming and thinking ‘no way’,”  Zhang said.

Zhang, a senior, played a big role in the Boys Varsity Soccer team’s victory over Fairfield on Sept. 9. Tied with a score of 2-2 against Fairfield, Zhang unleashed a shot with five seconds left from around 40 yards out, just steps inside midfield.

“It was surreal. I was so in awe when it happened,” senior Isaac Harmon, a Varsity teammate, said.

With the seconds left in the game ticking away, Zhang placed the chip shot perfectly over the goalkeepers’ outstretched hands, making the final score 3-2. This goal kept SHS undefeated in the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) with a record of 2-0, and boosted their overall winning record to a 5-1.

“Everyone just went crazy and we all just jumped on top of Yuan after he scored,” junior Jake Melser said. “Our coach was just as excited and ran and jumped too.”

The team and SHS students hope that this close game victory will give the team inspiration and good luck in their next game against their conference rivals: the Mason Comets.

The varsity team takes on the Comets tonight at 7 p.m. at home, after Volley for the Cure. The SHS and Mason Boys Varsity Soccer teams are currently tied for first place in the GMC.

After this game, SHS is ranked as the number 2 team in the city. Their recent play and Zhang’s unbelievable finish has impressed both soccer and non-soccer fans alike.
