Mae C. Jemison was the first African-American female astronaut. She is currently an active public speaker. She attended Stanford University on a National Achievement Scholarship. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. She was a member of the American Medical Association and The American Chemical Society. She received the 1988 Essence Science and Technology Award.
