Setter Kristy Russell pushes the ball back to the right side hitter. The setter position will need to be filled next year since Russell is a senior. Sydney Hineline and Abby Hughes will likely lead the team and be the starting setters.

None of the fall sports can say that they started preparing for their season in Feb., or say that they had a former Marine run their summer workouts.  However, the only sport that can say these things is volleyball.

Only weeks after semester exams, girls volleyball met after school for an hour and a half to start working on agility, strength, and endurance.  Conditioning continued for two days a week and will pick up in intensity after school lets out.

Then the real summer conditioning will begin.  For two and half hours, three days a week, the girls will work harder than ever before. They are determined to make this season one that they will never forget.

The desire to do well in the GMC conference is what drives the girls today, but like any goal, there are obstacles in their way. Some of those challenges are Mason, Lakota East and Lakota West, three of the best teams in the GMC conference.

The matches against these teams last year did not have positive outcomes, except for the East game which the girls won in 5 games.

“That was definitely one of the best games of the season. We were determined and fought so hard the whole night, and it paid off,” senior Courtney Cron said.

The juniors that will carry the team next season remain dedicated and want to win the conference title for themselves, as well as all their past teammates who were not able to during their time in the Sycamore volleyball program.

“The juniors who will lead the team next year do have to sacrifice so much time and, but when you’re doing it for something you love, it’s not really a sacrifice,” senior Elli Gibson said.

Conditioning will be held throughout the summer, and tryouts for the volleyball teams will be in August. The season will officially start towards the end of August and the State tournament is in October.
