Classic books you should read before you die

This list is only compiled of books that I have read. This does not include any I have not or ones that I did not enjoy or learn from. You can find these classics in almost any bookstore, such as the one shown above. This is a list of books compiled by Madeline Marsh, 10. I read often, classic books especially. This is a list of classic books that I believe everyone should read in their lifetime.

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee
  • A Room with a View by: E.M. Forster
  • Anne of Green Gables by: L.M. Montgomery (the whole series, if you like the first book)
  • Pride and Prejudice by: Jane Austen (and all of Austen’s other novels if you like that one)
  • Little Women by: Louisa May Alcott (and if you like that, try An Old Fashioned Girl and A Rose in Bloom)
  • Les Miserables by: Victor Hugo (also The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
  • The Complete stories of Sherlock Holmes by: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • The Scarlet Pimpernel by: Barnoness Emmuska Orkzy
  • The Tales of Winnie the Pooh by: A.A. Milne (Yes these are “children’s” books. But they are wonderful. As C.S. Lewis said, “A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”)
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by: C.S. Lewis
  • The Hobbit by: J.R.R. Tolkien
  • Mrs. Miniver by: Jan Struther (Actually, this book is especially interesting because each chapter is a story in and of itself, as it was a column in the London Times before it was a novel.)
  • Rebecca by: Daphne du Maurier (A mystery thriller. If you like the book, Alfred Hitchcock made a movie adaptation starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine)
  • Any and all of Agatha Christie’s novels
  • The Tales of Edgar Allen Poe
  • The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by: Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows (not a classic yet, but historical fiction. If there is any justice in the world, this book will be a Classic)
