Varsity softball celebrates Senior Night

After four years of hard work and dedication the Varsity softball seniors have officially played their final regular season home game. The team battled Hamilton in a close loss.

Several dedicated underclassmen decorated the field to support the seniors. They lined the fence with cups and decorated the sidewalk with chalk. “They were all really appreciative,” said Hannah Young, 9. Photo Courtesy of Ellen Martinson.

The six seniors on this year’s Varsity team are Rebecca Plaatje, Kelly Borman, Hannah Melvin, Marissa Shor, Jessica Miller, and Kathryn Eberhart.

There was a pre-game ceremony to honor the Seniors.  As a way to thank their parents for supporting their softball career, each player chose one parent to throw out the first pitch to them.

“My mom completely missed and almost hit the girl next to me, so that was funny,” said Shor.

In the game, each Senior played a vital role, whether it be getting a hit or catching a fly ball.

“It was really nice to get a hit in front of all of my family,” said Shor.

After the game, both the JV and Varsity teams celebrated with a grill-out, planned by the dedicated parents.

Currently there are five underclassmen left on the Varsity team. They will need to bounce back next year as they are losing the entire infield besides the third-baseman and the starting centerfielder.

Ellen Martinson, Staff Writer
As a senior, this is my fourth year on staff. In previous years, I’ve served as the fun and games chief, as an associate editor, and now I help edit the articles that go online. Outside of journalism, I can usually be found either running or in between second and third base on the softball field. I run cross country for our school team, but also enjoy running on my own. It’s very stress relieving after a long day of school!  In college, I plan on pursuing some health-science related field. Even though this field isn’t directly related to journalism, my experience on The Leaf will definitely help me with anything I chose to do. I’m excited for this year and looking forward to a great year on staff!
