How many years have you participated in band?

I have been in band since fifth grade which makes this my sixth year.

Why is band important to you?

It is important to me because in band you can spend time with people who love to do the same thing you do (play music) and you get to express yourself through music. It also gives you a family and a sense of belonging because of the unity that we have with each other.

Since you play the flute now, will you continue to play it after high school?

Yes, and I plan to learn to play other instruments also in the future.

What is your best memory from band?

My best memory from band was when we went on the canoe trip, because we got to tip each other over in the canoes and had tons of fun after all our hard work.

How much time do you dedicate to band?

One school bell a day as well as practice time at home, which ranges from 30 min a week to a few hours. I take private lessons for a half hour each week.

Also, during band season we have rehearsal three times a week that are about two and a half hours each, but I come 30 minutes early to help set up and get ready. We also have football games on Fridays and competitions that usually go from around 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

I am also a part of the pep band for basketball season which is optional.

What is it like now being in your second year of high school band?

I know more about what’s going on. Also, since I did it last year, people ask me for help instead of me asking them. I have started to know everyone better which makes it even more fun.
