Six years of Spanish: Q&A with senior Morgan Malof
November 7, 2014
After taking Spanish since 7th grade, the next step for students is taking Contemporary Hispanic Studies (CHS). In CHS they learn in Spanish about different culture concepts.
These concepts include immigration, modern day Latin America and Spain, illegal matters, trade agreements and politics that are associated with Spanish speaking countries.
Why did you choose to learn Spanish in 7th grade?
I think it’s beneficial to know more than one language since it helps people communicate with others on a different level. Also people appreciate it when people know multiple languages as young as I am, and I was interested in learning their language and culture.
What is your favorite part about learning Spanish?
I like the people in the class and the teacher. Also I like that now that I have taken Spanish for so many years I use it in my everyday life.
How do you use Spanish in your every day life?
I use it at Justice where I work. I’m the only bilingual worker there so it helps with business.
Have you ever traveled to any Spanish speaking countries?
I’ve traveled to Peru and plan on going to Spain this March.
What is it like to think in Spanish?
I don’t really notice when I do it but thinking in Spanish is the toughest thing to learn. It’s like thinking in English to me, that’s how natural it’s become.
When did you start thinking in Spanish?
I started thinking in Spanish when I took Spanish IV. I started dreaming in Spanish then along with thinking in Spanish. I also caught myself accidentally writing in Spanish.
Do you plan on using Spanish in the future?
I definitely plan on using Spanish in the future and want to get a minor in it.
