Track and field: running to win

Meghan DiGiovanna, Staff Writer

  • Track meets begin with the team warming up with running two laps. Then the team will run through a number of dynamic stretches. Finally they will go through their stretching routine before they break off into their different events.

    '
  • Field events usually start about an hour before running events. This includes, throwing, high jump, long jump, and pole vault. This way when running events begin jumpers do not have to worry about more than one event at a time.

  • Following the start of the meet, events alternate between distance and sprinting. Races also differ between relays and open races. At the beginning of most races runners come out of blocks.

    '
  • Prior to the start of their race, runners go through their routine. This may include stretches or jumping. Anything that will shake out nerves.

    '
  • Throughout the meet coaches will check in with runners getting ready to compete. They may give last minute coaching or changes. Generally it is just to give words of wisdom.

    '
  • Runners remain in their lanes for most races. However in some relays and distance events runners will move over to the first lane. The majority of open sprinting events are run in individual lanes.

    '
  • Throwing events are generally held away from the track. Most school’s throwing areas are located in open fields or hills. All throwing events are held before the meet with jumping events.

    '
  • Runners are always pushing each other to improve. Going into meets the team always has goals they hope to meet. Runners also have individual goals. All photos courtesy of McDaniel’s Photography
