Every year the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) holds a tournament for each sport in divisions one and two. On Wed., Sept. 30, Coach Michael Teets and the SHS girls gold tennis team defeated top-ranked Mason High School 3-2.
Mason was ranked number two in Ohio going into this season, and Sycamore was ranked seven.
Senior Margaret Skwara said, “Beating Mason was one of the most exhilarating moments of my high school tennis career. We knew they were a tough opponent going in, but we stayed strong and managed to defeat them.”
Skwara defeated Mason’s Lizzy Kong in the clinching game to win the match 3-2. SHS currently is in the Elite Eight for the division one state tournament and will play Ursuline Academy; the date has yet to be announced.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Jiang said, “Last year, we were so close to making the final four, but we lost to Ursuline. This year we will get a chance to redeem ourselves.”
The tennis team lost to Mason when they played them during the season and at the Coaches’ Classic.
Jiang said, “Beating Mason for the first time this year was a huge deal, especially since they are number two in the state. All season we have had a tough time against them but we finally defeated them.”
