The holidays are often the busiest times of the year, packed with family, gift-buying, celebrations on every corner, and now exams to top it off. However, as any musician will attest to, tis also the season for holiday concerts and performances galore.
Orchestra’s winter concert will take place on Thurs. Dec. 3 at 7 pm.
It will take place that the Junior High, and all of Sycamore’s orchestras will participate, making a culmination of everyone from fifth graders performing “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” for the first time to seniors having participated in the tradition for eight years.
Certain members of top band will join orchestra in performing the piece “That’s Entertainment,” while the orchestra will perform the rest of the program, “Pi Tunes” and “Dueling Jingle Bells” by itself.
Sophomore Kiri Wang said, “My favorite piece is ‘That’s Entertainment,’ because it’s slightly more challenging than the others, which makes it interesting. Some of the other pieces are just kind of boring to play.”
The entire concert will conclude with the finale, a rock arrangement of “March of the King/ Hark the Herald Angels Sing” with all orchestra students, featuring SEE1, SHS’s electric ensemble.
Sophomore Charles Harte said,”It’s fun to play with the orchestra, but it’s different from concert band because you have to be more confident in your entrances and it’s more about popping out than blending in.”
The concert is earlier than usual this year, due to the early exams. Orchestra students will leave the school Thursday morning for a rehearsal/ run through on the Junior High stage. They will also play the finale with the entire group and the electric instruments for the first time.
Sophomore Rishav Dasgupta said, “Everyone should attend the concert because Sycamore actually has a really outstanding band and orchestra program, especially for high school standards.”
