Only three members of the Brazilian soccer team survived and are in the hospital. In addition, two crew members and one journalist survived. The plane crashed outside of Medellin, Colombia.

Rescuers scanned a Colombian hillside for survivors from a devastating plane crash. On Mon., Nov. 28, an Avro RJ85 was en route from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Medellin when it crashed near Rionegro, Colombia.

According to CNN, 72 passengers and nine crew members were on board, and at least 75 people were killed. Six people survived.

“This is such a horrible tragedy, and I can’t imagine what their families and friends are going through,” said Grace Deng, 9.

The plane was also carrying a first-division Brazilian soccer team headed to a historic game. The team, Chapecoense, had been scheduled to play in the Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional in Medellin.

“It is so sad to hear that they were on their way to a game in which they could have possibly made history,” said Sarah Abraham, 11.

According to USA TODAY, Chapecoense represents Chapeco, a southern city of about 200,000 more than 800 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro.

“I hope that airplane operators take more precautions. They need to be aware of fuel levels, weather, and other factors that could affect the flight,” said Deng.

The team steadily climbed the ranks, reaching the top division of Brazilian soccer. Around 20 journalists were on the flight to experience the possible win at the game.

It is not clear what the cause of the crash was, but heavy rains and thunderstorms hit Colombia the day of the tragedy.
