Swimming heads to GMC championships
February 3, 2017
If you ask any member of the men’s’ swim team in 2015-2016, they would say that their biggest accomplishment was defeating Mason for the Greater Miami Conference title. This year, they aim to keep their title as GMC champions.

Although this goal is very achievable, it will be somewhat difficult to achieve after the team graduated key members of the class of 2016 Eammon Bell and Christopher Seger. Bell placed third in the 50 freestyle and Seger placed fourth in both the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, both earning important points for the team’s victory.

“Although we lost a few good seniors, our underclassmen have really stepped it up. I believe we will be able to hold our own against Mason this season once again,” said Matthew Schuetz, 12.

Schuetz is one of the team’s seven seniors this year. Last year he placed third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle. The team’s estimated top placers include Schuetz, who is ranked second in the 200 freestyle, Samuel Risma, ranked second in the 50 freestyle, and Elliott Carl ranked second in the 500 freestyle.

“I am really excited for GMC’s. It is a chance for us to show the hard work we have done this season. Go Aves beat Mason!” said Risma.
The projection on the girls’ side is either second to Mason or third to Lakota West.

“It is really hard for us to beat Mason because they have so much depth in their lineup. This year we are in closer competition with Lakota West, who has about the same skill level and team size as us,” said Sarah Abraham, 11.

It will be up to the swimmers to place where they need to, but the team is overall very hopeful for the upcoming weekend.
