DANCING QUEEN. Seniors Elissa Allen and Lukas Garcia are all smiles right before the 2017 prom. They are both wearing things designed by Allen. “I took a 1920’s wedding dress and combined it with a modern prom dress. I made his boutonniere and my head piece,” Allen said.

It is that time of the year again when, just like clockwork, the leaves begin to fall, the air transitions from muggy to crisp, and… Fashion Club commences!

For those who are not familiar with it, Fashion Club is where fashion enthusiasts can learn about sewing, pattern-making, and working on their own design projects- all while contributing to Fashion for the Cure (FFTC).

“We work on projects for [FFTC], such as kids designing their own dresses. We have little children [with cancer] draw their own T-shirt or dress design.

“We draw it on fabric, then we paint it,” said Ms. Deborah Klemt, fashion design teacher and Fashion Club adviser.

Klemt is describing the process where Fashion Club members make these kids’ designs come to life.

They do so by transferring the designs to fabric by hand. Then, the club sews the individual textiles into dresses and tee-shirts.

The kids wear these garments at the FFTC fashion show, which will take place on Fri., Feb. 23, 2018.

DRAWING DESTINEE. Ramsey begins sketching a new fashion design. She is an avid drawer, and the subjects of her sketches are typically fashion related. “I usually do five to ten sketches per week,” Ramsey said.

However, working on clothing for FFTC is not the only thing that goes on at Fashion Club.

“We will have every other Fashion Club meeting be a work day where people can come in and just sew.

“We will definitely look at colleges and see when they have fashion shows and possibly set up something where we [go to] the fashion show- like maybe DAAP,” said Elissa Allen, 12, president of Fashion Club.

This will be Allen’s first year as the president of Fashion Club, and she will also have co-president Destinee Ramsey, 12, to make sure that the club runs smoothly and reaches its full potential.

“We will [bring] different perspectives this year,” Ramsey said, talking about what new skills she and Allen offer to Fashion Club.

The reason for this leadership change is because former fashion club president Samantha Rohr graduated SHS and is now attending the University of Cincinnati. There, she is studying costume design.

Like Rohr, both Ramsey and Allen aspire to work in the world of fashion. This passion for design is what fuels Fashion Club and makes it so special and successful.

If you are interested in Fashion Club, it meets twice a month on Thursdays in room 256.
