    • TROUBLE IN TEXAS. Mother nature is fierce, unforgiving, and harsh—especially when we least expect it. And, in the past couple of weeks, no state has had to learn that better than Texas. With frigid temperatures, state-wide power outages, and an entire population unfamiliar with aggressive winter weather, the period of February storms was a disaster waiting to happen.

    • THE THIRD STIMULUS PACKAGE. Over a year has passed since the COVID-19 pandemic first reached American soil, and since then, economic havoc has been wrought over us all. Now, almost two months into the Biden administration, the nation is watching as the campaign promise of another round of aid is reaching Congressional floors. On February 27, 2021, the House of Representatives passed a $1.9 trillion stimulus package, voting on close party lines at 219-212 in the favor of Democrats in order to pass the controversial bill. Now we wait as the legislation enters the Senate chambers, and the future of the stimulus package is decided. Learn more about the actual contents of the package, when we might see it pass, the minimum wage deal tied alongside the ordeal, and more below!

    • WILDFIRES. This summer, many states in the West coast suffered a disastrous season of wildfires resulting in dozens of deaths and the destruction of over 5 million acres of land. The fires caused concern over air quality as plumes of smoke have travelled all across the country. “Not only was the air quality poor, but the sky maintained a dismal orange tone that blocked out the sun.” “It looked like a scene from the Martian,” explained Morgan Taylor-Cohen, a high school student from the Bay Area, adding that “at 3 pm it felt like 3 am.”

    • Pictured is the Google Meet homepage, something that students and teachers in 2020 know all too well. Although virtual students are used to attending class virtually through this interface, face-to-face students may be feeling nervous about adjusting once again during the upcoming week of virtual school. In order to ease some of these concerns, SHS principal Mr. Doug Mader explained the specifics of this week and beyond. He also reassured SHS students and staff, saying he thinks “it will be a very successful week.” Photo courtesy of Allison McElroy.
