Sycamore families gather for art

  • COLORS AND FEATHERS. On Sat. Feb. 2, Sycamore students and their families from all seven schools gathered at SHS to admire art from Kindergarten to senior pieces of work. SHS students in the fashion design class had their clothes pieces displayed in the art show, and some even were lucky enough to have their clothes in Fashion for the Cure in February to benefit the Dragonfly Foundation. From feather dresses to bright orange pantsuits, the students applied their artistic abilities to show to the Sycamore community.

  • DRAW, PAINT, BUILD. At the Sycamore Art Show, works of art from all grades were displayed. The day before the show, art teachers from the four different Elementary schools, E.H. Greene school, Junior High, and High School gathered to put up the multitude of pieces done by students. Included was a group project by the Elementary students where they colored on pieces of paper and then constructed a cityscape by sticking the separately colored pages together by cutting slits and placing them together to construct a criss cross. Junior High students made Zentangles, a series of different patterns placed next to each other, creating the students’ hair above a photo of their face.

  • GO AVES. While displaying student artwork, the Sycamore Aviator spirit is also present. In 2017, Junior High School art teacher, Melissa Speelman created paper mache letters to spell “AVES.” Students also helped Mrs. Speelman to creatively paint and also paper mache the large letters. While every letter is painted differently they have the overall theme of Sycamore colors, green and gold. The art show was held in SHS’ gymnasium with students’ artwork covering the walls.

  • BE CREATIVE. These two pieces displayed in the Sycamore art show were made by students at Montgomery Elementary School. Each Sycamore Schools student shows their creativity differently, whether it be a painting, photograph, sculpture, or an item made of clay. Students at Sycamore are encouraged to use alternative materials to form any type of art they would like to. Some elementary school students had the privilege of having their artwork displayed at the SHS Art Show. Friends and family came to see the masterpieces of Sycamore Community Schools’ students.

  • ALMOST TO GRADUATION. All senior SHS students involved in the art program are required to make a portfolio in the form of an art installation. While photography students work to gather their best photos to display to the Sycamore community, students such as senior Paige Weitz work to build their pottery portfolio full of bowls, dishes, and other interesting sculptures.

  • BUILD IT. Ceramics students at SHS had multiple pieces displayed to show their artistic side. Throughout the semester-long class, Ceramics students are allowed to sculpt plates, bowls, or other visually enticing items. While Elementary school students display fun pieces, some SHS students use the Art show as a way to practice for what they will experience in the future as an artist. SHS students were hard at work preparing for the art show in the weeks to come.

  • ARTSY STUDENTS. Students of Sycamore were directed to choose a shape and repeat it while changing the background, as seen in the picture. While completing this project, students learned about different artists including Georgia O’keeffe and Van Gogh. The Sycamore Art Show represents Sycamore Community Schools and the wide range of creativity and talent throughout. Many SHS families gathered to view art from their children, and also others, aged five to 18.

  • DIFFERENT STYLES. While all students have different personalities, they also produce different forms of art from sunflowers, to designed hands, to words written with each letter drawn as an item. While viewing the SHS Art Show, one can see how more personality is shown in an SHS students’ piece compared to the piece of a Kindergartener. AT Sycamore, art is one way students can express themselves and add their own style to their work.
