Welcome back to the Weekly Rundown! I hope you’ve had a great week, and that your Monday has been great so far. This Weekly Rundown will cover the week of April 23 to April 30th.

General News

   This week, President Joe Biden announced his intention to run for reelection in the 2024 presidential election. He pledged to achieve goals set in his first term if reelected, saying he needs more time to “finish the job.” Biden also hosted a state dinner with South Korea’s president Yoon Suek Suel on Wednesday, April 26th. The visit was to celebrate the two nations’ 70-year alliance.

   Two prominent news anchors, Tucker Carlson for Fox News and Don Lemon for CNN, were fired. Carlson was ousted for vulgar language towards top executives and Lemon for alleged misconduct towards coworkers.

   Singer Ed Sheeran began a copyright trial in New York on Tuesday, April 25. The trial is about whether Sheeran’s hit song “Thinking Out Loud” copied Martin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On.” 

   On Friday, April 21st, Eid al-fitr was celebrated. It can be translated as “the feast of fast-breaking”and it commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims–who are able to do so–will fast from before dawn until after sunset each day.

Good News of the Week

   The Ocean-Shot Project, created and led by climate scientist Dr. Deborah Brosnan, launched in 2021 to develop a coral reef restoration initiative.  Their new project is in the Caribbean, where preliminary testing began six months ago. They are already seeing very promising results in the creation of new coral reefs, with a 98% survival rate reported.

Sports

   Though the NBA playoffs began on April 15th, eight teams made it through to the semi-finals as of April 30th. The semi-finals will begin on May 1st. Point guard Stephen Curry set a Game 7 record of fifty points against the Sacramento Kings, leading The Warriors to the semi-finals.

Weather

   On Tuesday, expect clouds, with partly cloudy weather through the rest of the week. The high is forecasted to be 75 degrees fahrenheit on Sunday, and the low is 37 degrees fahrenheit on Tuesday.

Local News

   The NFL draft began on Thursday, April 27th. In the first round, the Begals selected Clemson defensive end, Myles Murphy. Murphy will be wearing No. 99 on the field.

Today in History…

   On May 2nd, 2008  the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released. It was “Iron Man” directed by Jon Favreau, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, and it grossed $585.8 million.
