Hi, my name is Gabby Guliants and I am a senior new to journalism this year. I will be a staff writer, and I am super excited because I enjoy writing a lot, and want to incorporate more of it into my life. I think it’s awesome that The Leaf is able to expand on so many diverse topics and ideas, reporting on anything from possible contaminants in drinking water to why people love bread! It’s important to truly write for the people — resonating with everyone at Sycamore and bringing us together, even in trying times.

As a high school journalism student, I aspire to learn more about my peers and our school community. I hope to write about a variety of topics that interest Sycamore students and also showcase the unique quirks that make our school such a special place. I also want to develop a better personal writing style and interview skills.

At Sycamore, I am a part of Fashion for the Cure, an organization that helps The Dragonfly Foundation. FFTC is a huge part of my life and it makes a huge impact on the Cincinnati community. I suggest that everyone participate in it at least at some point in high school ;)

Outside of school, I love spending time with friends and family. Having meaningful relationships with people in your life is super important and rewarding! I also love watching Netflix (Criminal Minds is the current favorite) and listening to music (The Beatles are my most listened to right now). I am also a lover of all things fashion, speaking Spanish, and eating lots of ice cream.

In high school, I’ve really enjoyed learning about psychology and biology, and plan on studying biological or biomedical sciences in college (while continuing to write, of course). I currently plan on pursuing a premedical track and want to continue volunteering and staying involved with The Dragonfly Foundation in the future.

I’m really looking forward to making my last year at SHS amazing, which will be easy with the help of my Sycamore family! Go Aves!

TMI. Many people use social media to share intimate details of their lives with their followers, which can result in oversharing. “I think people find it easier to share their ideas and thoughts through a screen,” Kendall Mather, 12.

SENIOR PLANNING DAY. On Wednesday, October 14th, seniors will not be attending in person or virtual classes. While underclassmen take on standardized tests such as the ACT Aspire and the PSAT, 12th graders are given the day off to plan for the future and make preparations for their pursuits after high school. This day should be used for researching colleges, careers, or any other post-secondary endeavors, as well as completing college applications or attending virtual college tours. This planning day is especially timely, with early action/decision deadlines approaching on or around November 1. “All of my college visits were canceled, but luckily we were able to stop by a few last week. I turned in all of my applications on October 6th and plan to do virtual tours on senior planning day to finish the process,” Maya Berry, 12. Photo courtesy of Maya Berry.
