Hello, my name is Jackson Shock, I am a senior at Sycamore. This year I will be working as a Staff Writer for The Leaf. Although this is only my first year doing journalism, I am really excited! I decided to join the program because I have always been interested in journalism and asking questions. In the future, I aspire to be a Sports Broadcaster for hockey, basketball, football, and baseball.

A little bit about me:I am from Alexandria, Virginia (near Washington D.C.), but I moved to Cincinnati when I was three years old. I have gone to Sycamore Schools my whole life and have enjoyed my time here. I am the captain of the Sycamore hockey team and an all around huge sports fan. I love to spend time with my family and friends doing whatever, wherever. In addition, I love dogs; I have two: a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Husky.

THEY ARE HERE! The dreaded 17-year timer is up. If you have not heard, cicadas are coming out this year. Brood X will be emerging from the ground, bringing billions of cicadas this year in large swarms. Many are not ready for these red-eyed, inch-long, flying insects who release a mating call that can reach 100 decibels, which, in comparison, is as loud as a jet taking off. And believe it or not, some even consider cicadas a delicacy. Cicadas are featured in many meals such as ice cream, salads, and even ramen dishes. Cicadas offer a great source of protein, zinc, iron, and are low in fat.

SPOTIFY WRAPPED 2020 IS HERE. Spotify wrapped has come out again with it’s annual reports and everyone is fascinated by it once again. There are not many things cooler than seeing a customized playlist and stats about what music you have listened to over the year, But what makes it so cool? Is it the music itself? Is it because you can show off your top songs and artists? Well the answer is it’s a little of both. We asked SHS students what they thought of their wraps to find out more.

SPORTS ARE ON! Although most people thought winter sports were coming to a halt, Sycamore’s Data Assessment Risk Team (DART) came to the conclusion that sports will continue during the post-Thanksgiving quarantine. All athletics for grades 7-12 will continue as planned for the week of November 30th - December 4th.
Sycamore Athletic Director Mark Harden discussed the decision for sports to continue during the virtual week. When asked about the numbers behind the decision, Harden said, “Since September 1st there have been two positive cases. That is two student-athletes out of 708 students competing in fall (365) and winter (343) or .002%. At the Junior High, they've had one case for over 400 athletes. In addition, there has been zero team/school spread - No positive tests of those in quarantine from close contact.” Harden goes on to talk more in-depth about the decision and how it was made along with the advantages of the decision.

READY, SET, HIKE. The Big Ten football season was back after an extended off season due to COVID-19. The conference's committee made the announcement on September 15 that they would be playing games and fans had been anxious for them to start. Other conferences such as the SEC and ACC had started the season at the original start date and showed that it was possible for college football to take place, even under such harsh conditions because of COVID-19. All 14 teams played over the weekend and there was a wide variety of games. There were blowouts like the Ohio State and Wisconsin games, and there were also close games like the Penn State vs Indiana game which was won in the last seconds of overtime. One of the biggest games was an upset by Rutgers vs Michigan State, Rutgers won that game 38-27 and ended their 3-year Big Ten losing streak. The league also has Five ranked teams after Saturday's games. I interviewed a huge Ohio State football fan to see his reaction to the start and what the future of Big Ten football will look like.
