Tori Swart, Broadcast Editor-In-Chief

Hello! I am a senior and I am the executive director for WAVES, The Leaf’s broadcast program. I would generally describe myself as a doer- when there is an idea that can be put into effect or a job to be done, I work extremely hard in order to see it completed. I did not join journalism merely for the work, however, I joined because stories are my passion. That is one of the reasons why I love working with video- I can experience how a story can be put together, and I have the privilege to get to know another person. The people are really what it is all about. Another passion of mine is sports. This year, I am participating in the cross country team in the fall, the indoor track team in the winter and the outdoor track team in the spring. My specialty event is pole vault, in which I hope to continue competing in college. I am extremely excited for this upcoming year, both for the journalism class and for my senior year in general. New opportunities will appear, new people will become new friends and new stories will unfold. My past work can be seen here.

High school runners combine with junior high runners for warm-up drills directed by coach Richard Shomo. The seventh and eighth graders had the opportunity to watch the top high school athletes compete in their events, while the high schoolers had the opportunity to connect with the younger runners. The Showcase will continue as an annual event.

Sophomore Joshua Glauser sprints the open 400 meter dash. He heard that he qualified for the State Championships in the event on the Wednesday before the competition.
“I wasn’t even thinking about qualifying in the 400 when I ran it at the University of Findlay, just being in the top 35. I was in chemistry class when I got a text from my mom saying that I had made it. I was genuinely shocked,” Glauser said.

Senior Adam Lucken passes the baton to junior Jonathon Hedrick in the 1600 meter relay. Lucken pulled a hamstring during his 800 meter race at the M-F Invitational at the University of Findlay, but the relay still qualified for the Indoor State Track and Field Championships. Senior Timothy Leonard advises as Frank Abagnale, Sr. that people see only what they want to see. His son, Frank Abagnale, Jr., is played by senior Paul Phillips. The story within “Catch Me If You Can” is a true one, first made into a movie starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, and then transformed into a Broadway musical in 2011 starring Aaron Tveit.

Junior Amara Clough (far left) introduces herself with the other Jet girls in the musical number “Jet Set” in “Catch Me If You Can.” Clough plays the hardworking nurse and love interest Brenda Strong.
“I’m playing her as mostly sweet, but there is a little bit of an edge in her song, ‘Fly, Fly Away.’ She’s definitely more than just a sweet little southern girl, so hopefully I’ll be able to bring that out,” Clough said.

Sophomore Mason Taylor examines a newspaper article as FBI agent Carl Hanratty. His coworkers, Agents Cod and Branton, are played by senior Jennifer Adamec and junior Mitchell Singstock. The two, along with junior Graham Lutes as Agent Dollar, provide some of the comic relief within the FBI agency, giving snarky comments and sarcastic jokes in response to Hanratty’s investigative efforts.

Junior Jon Hedrick warms up on the track before his event, the 200 meter sprint. For him, the races themselves are not the most exciting part about track, but all the preparations beforehand.
“There’s this whole atmosphere before a race: you’ve got your hood up, the rain’s drizzling on your hood and you’re getting all pumped up because of your music. You can’t hear anyone else. That’s my favorite moment,” Hedrick said.
