WATCH. The hit show on Netflix, “Stranger Things,” won for best television drama. The show proved to be a success soon after its release on Netflix. Cast member David Harbour spoke out against Trump in his acceptance speech with the crowd roaring in approval.

With awards season in full swing, actors and actresses are celebrated for their work in the film and television industries. In particular, in response to recent events, celebrities have used their big platforms to denounce President Donald Trump’s policies and actions.

Following Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes where she slammed Trump for his anti-immigration stances, fellow actors and actresses have followed suit in expressing their disdain in his decisions.

“I think it is so cool that celebrities are using their huge platforms to express their views and raise awareness for on certain issues,” said Sarah Abraham, 11.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are often predictive of Oscar wins, but the wins were overshadowed by the amount of focus fixed upon Trump’s immigration order and the widespread reaction to it.

“Award ceremonies are often seen as events to celebrate the work of famous actors and actresses but recently they have taken a political turn,” Abraham said.

The award ceremony’s first winner for best actress in a comedy series (“Veep”), Julia Louis-Dreyfus, spoke in her acceptance speech about her horror at the immigration ban, stating it is “un-American.”

“It is interesting to see such famous people take stances on such big topics, it can really influence the media,” said Lily Retford, 12.

With the Academy Awards taking place next month, celebrities will most likely express more of their views on Trump and his policies, as the ceremony is viewed by a global audience consisting of millions.
