Hi, my name is Danielle Hershenson and I am a senior this year at Sycamore High School.

I joined the Leaf this year because I have always loved writing and wanted to incorporate some more of it in my day. This year in journalism I am really excited to learn more about current events, my fellow SHS classmates, and the field of journalism as a staff writer. I can’t wait to write interesting stories and to educate others on important and entertaining topics!! I hope to contribute a lot to the Leaf and become part of this incredible community.

Other than writing, my other creative outlet is photography. In the past I have taken three different photography classes at the high school and am currently enrolled in AP Photography. A lot of my free time is spent taking photographs and developing them. Photography is such an important passion of mine and I can’t wait to continue shooting pictures and learn about this art.

Aside from photography, other topics I have enjoyed learning about in high school are psychology and language arts. I'm even planning on majoring in English and minoring in Cognitive Neuroscience in college.

Outside of school I am a part of many organizations including Bbyo, a Jewish youth group, where I was recently President of my chapter and AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). I believe that the unique experiences I have gotten through my involvement in these organizations will help me bring a new perspective to the Leaf. I am also a part of Sycamore’s ski club, dedicated to a few volunteer organizations, and a sales associate at TJ Maxx.

A fun fact about me is that I have been to 42 states and have been out of the country seven times. I love to travel and hope to visit all 50 states, all seven continents and study abroad a few times in my lifetime.

I am really looking forward to my final year of high school and being a part of the Leaf!! Enjoy :)

FOSTERING. According to The Humane Society, about 70% of cats that enter shelters are euthanized—put to death humanely. Tragically, this is because shelters have become so full that they do not have space or resources to properly care for all of the animals that need help.
Obviously, you can always help shelters by donating or volunteering but not many people know that you can actually foster animals at home. Fostering means that you and your family take care of an animal—usually, a cat or dog—for as little time as a week or until that pet is able to be adopted. My personal specialty is cats and kittens but there are also countless resources to help you foster puppies or dogs as well.

Is Fostering For You?

ADDICTED. As High School Students, we are constantly moving; constantly doing homework, working, studying, and participating in extracurriculars. We hardly have time to relax, much less get a full nine hours of sleep. To keep up with our busy schedules and sleep deprivation, most of us turn to caffeine. Whether its a coffee on the way to school, a monster at lunch, or a soda after school, caffeine is a part of a majority of teens diets.
According to the National Sleep Foundation teens (14-17) need 8-10 hours of sleep and young adults (18-25) need 7-9 hours of sleep. Shockingly, a 2018 study revealed that only 27% of teens are meeting this criterion (AAP News). This overwhelming loss of sleep and exhaustion is probably what leads most teens to make their first cup of coffee.
Caffeine addiction is the reliance on caffeine and is common among teens and young adults. Caffeine addictions can be subtle and you may not even realize if you have one. Furthermore, a reliance on caffeinated beverages may not seem all that awful but it can lead to many unwanted symptoms and health effects.

HOW TO HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR. The holidays are now fast approaching and COVID-19 is still affecting every part of our life. Halloween is a time for candy, costumes, and celebrating, but can it still occur this year? Health officials recently released a list of guidelines and suggestions to help Ohio have a healthy Halloween. This Halloween everyone should be wearing their protective face masks, even if also wearing a costume mask, and should continue to be socially distant. While this should continue like always, the state offered some unique suggestions to celebrate the holiday safely. Some of these ideas include, holding a drive thru trick-or-treat, having a pumpkin carving contest over video call, and leaving treats in the mailboxes of friends and neighbors. Though our world has never been more different, Halloween should still be a time of celebration. Stay Safe!
