INTRIGUE. Allison Linser, 10, pores over a summative handout distributed at the meeting. Those present viewed a video about homelessness and periods as a supplement to the co-presidents’ address. “I’m so happy to be getting to help the community and I hope a lot more people will join in [the club’s] efforts soon,” Linser said.

Homeless Care Club (HCC), a new addition to SHS’s flourishing résumé of activities, came together for its first official meeting on Mon., Sept. 25 following an unusually festive day of school.

The club, founded and presided over by sophomores Caroline Skwara and Anisa Khatana, is launching an initiative to collect feminine hygiene products for those experiencing homelessness in Greater Cincinnati.

The pair hopes to achieve this through the passion of peers and support from the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition (GCHC), which will be assisting in the distribution of products gathered by club members.

“We started this club because we had learned about the issue of homeless women not having access to feminine hygiene products, and we wanted to start addressing this issue in order to make a difference in their lives,” Skwara said.

Through HCC fundraisers and collections, SHS students will be able to donate feminine care products, money to purchase products, or money for the GCHC.

This informational meeting gave an overview of HCC’s mission, plans, and offerings, which will be reiterated in the next meeting as members begin to plan events for the club.

“I hope in the future that our club can impact not only the people experiencing homelessness in Cincinnati, but also Sycamore students and the way that they view [philanthropy and] others that may be less fortunate,” Skwara said.

HCC meets right after school in room 152 and plans to meet on the first Monday of each month.

Members will be involved in organizing fundraisers, donation drives, and other interactive events to raise money and awareness for the cause.

“I think the HCC’s first meeting was successful… I’m excited to work with [the GCHC],” said Grant Gvozdanovic, 11.
