GYMNASTICS. Sophomore Juliet Horenziak has been competing as a gymnast for over 10 years, and was recently named the Region 5 Junior National Champion on beam as well as all around. She hopes to pursue gymnastics in college just like her mother, hopefully at Stanford University. “It’s really nice to perform well, especially after all of the hours I spend and sacrifices I’ve made. It’s such a rewarding feeling,” Horenziak said.

CARPOOL. As the school year begins, there seems to be a rise in carpooling at Sycamore. Often overlooked, there are actually many advantages to carpooling. “Last year, at most I was able to take six people to school at a time. While most of them drove with me because most of them couldn’t drive at the time, I still enjoyed it. It may have been a bit chaotic, but it made the mornings fun” said Samuel Barans, 12.

CAPTIVITY. Though Orca whales are the main attraction of parks like Sea World, bringing awestruck children and families from all across the country, these animals should not be kept in captivity. The physical and mental affects of confinement are extremely harmful to the orcas, and are causing many to die out fast. “I think that unless the aquarium or park is purely based on rehabilitation, it should not have any captive animals,” said Kasey Lowe, 10.

Recently, the senior English classes had an assignment of meditating for 10 minutes, an activity inspired by their unit on the book “Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse. Then they had to write a reflection on their experience. Some students feel that meditation is not beneficial for them at all. However, others like Emil Barr believe that meditation has many positive effects on their well being.

First-hand learning experiences at its finest, 30 SHS Chinese class students traveled to Fuyao’s manufacturing plant in Dayton, Ohio, after watching the documentary “American Factory.” According to Chinese 5 student, Theo Eborall, 12, “...I  found it really interesting to watch and learn how the two cultures worked together.”

HAPPINESS BEGINS. The Jonas Brothers’ new album is everything that fans could have dreamed for; the trio has finally found their own genre of music, and are soaring to great heights. Highlights of the album include songs like “Don’t throw it Away” and “Cool,” which provide hidden messages and morals that are heavily applicable to todays world. “I cannot praise it enough. The album is so memorable, and probably my favorite collection of songs,” said Audrey Simmons, 12.
