LEADING LADY. Her second leading role in her SHS theatre career, junior Payton Hines played the quirky and romantic Juliet, her friendship with Romeo actor Jake Jervis coming in handy as they told a tale of love, woe, and unexpected happiness. Hines has expressed her sadness about how the arts have been severely disadvantaged during the pandemic, but is thrilled to be back on stage. “We are all just so extremely excited to be performing again with the energy of the audience, the lights, and the physical community for being together. While this year looks different and we have faced a new set of challenges, we are just so grateful to be back doing what we love,” Hines said.

CENTER STAGE. Irena’s Vow is a play written by Dan Gordon. It was on broadway for a period of time and was performed at SHS on Feb. 2, 3, and 4. The show is about a Polish worker during the holocaust who hides twelve Jews in the basement of the German commander.

To get into NHS you must have a GPA of 3.6 or higher and a total of 50 community service hours. Also, NHS not only a good way to get involved with your school, and your community, it teaches service and character building. All photos by Jeremy McDaniel.

Junior Camila Cardenas as she talks about her sponsor. Each student who was initiated into the NHS received a rose and a candle. Many of the students were nervous about their speeches.

Principal Doug Mader gives a speech at the beginning of the NHS induction ceremony. He talks to the students about the honorability of NHS and its history. The students listen intently and appreciate his speech.

There are five ceremonial candles. They are lit at the beginning of the ceremony. NHS chapters seek to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote leadership, to stimulate a desire to serve others and to develop character.

Senior Austin Schaefer lights a ceremonial candle for character which is one of the five traits of NHS members. This lighting is a tradition for NHS initiation. Austin is lighting this candle because he is the president of NHS.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Madrigal , a coed acapella choir sings. This choir is directed by Mr.Holt.

The National Honor Society induction occurred November 22. There are many chapters of NHS located in all 50 states. More than one million members involved in this club.
