Claire Berlier, Deputy Content Editor

Hello everyone! I’m Claire Berlier, and I am a junior. This is my third year at the Leaf and I am absolutely thrilled to be the deputy content editor, which basically means I oversee stories and designs in the Package section and help writers with their stories in all the sections.

I joined the program two years ago because of my love for writing and now I am helping other writers make their stories better! I love all the opportunities this program gives me to learn new skills, know what’s happening around SHS, and fine-tune my writing. Speaking of writing, in 202o I won an ‘Excellent’ OSMA award for a Sports-Opinion piece; in 2021, I won a Best of Sno award for ‘Aftermath of Atlanta-area shootings’ and a ‘honorable mention’ OSMA award for in-depth reporting.

Besides working on The Leaf, I am also involved in cross country and winter and spring track. I’ve been running every year since 7th grade, and I’m on my eighth pair of running shoes! Who knows how many shoes I’ll go through by senior year? Another thing I’m the president of Women in STEM club, which I started two years ago. We bring in women speakers from various STEM jobs that you might not have known existed to help you learn about all the different career options you have and the experiences women have working in a male-dominated field. Personally, I want to go into a STEM job (probably statistics) so I love hearing all the advice our speakers share!

Outside of school, I spend most of my free time sewing and crocheting. The list of clothes I have sewn continues to get longer and longer, including a romper, multiple skirts, a jacket, and even my homecoming dress. One of my favorite projects was a mini bucket hat for my dog (although she’s not the biggest fan of wearing it—clearly she is not going to be a fashion icon anytime soon).

I am so excited for another year at SHS and writing for The Leaf and I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy producing it!

Seniors Peyton Hines, Julie Fort, Belle Scholles, and Kelly Donovan, and juniors Morgan Robbins and Maria Shomo lined up in performance and sang an amazing rendition of the song “Ex-wives” during the Variety Show. Shomo, one of the ex-wives, said, “I had such a fun time working with my friends and creating our performance together and watching everyone else kill their own unique acts both nights!”

Pictured above is sophomore Claire Dillon who received her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on March 29. “I think its the tiniest thing...like youre just getting a needle poked in your arm for a quick second and it really does help with the coronavirus efforts so, like I said, if you can get it, absolutely do it… It keeps you safe, it keeps those around you safe,” Dillon said.

Five episodes of Wandavision have been released on DisneyPlus. This show is full of intrigue and is very intriguing and a new take on a subtle homage to sitcoms through the decades.

The Queen’s Gambit: a common chess opening involving the white player sacrificing a Queen-side pawn to secure control of the center of the board; an attacking move. Or, in the case of this review, a well-edited, intense Netflix miniseries with impressive acting and overarching themes that’s worth watching.

First, choose a base color and paint all of your nails. Then, pick a nail design of your choice. They are in order of easiest to hardest. Feel free to mix and match them. Make sure to let your base color completely dry before creating the nail design.

NOT SO CHARMING. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting out of the spotlight by stepping away from the monarchy, which is not as charming as it seems. This is unprecedented territory. Even so, does anyone in SHS care? The answer is no, if the average student is anything like freshman Nicole Payton who said, “I’m not really sure [what’s happening with the British monarchy]. I know someone left and someone else is made, but that’s about it.”

BACKPACKS. One of the best things about the high school is a newly acquired freedom that was not available at the junior high—being able to carry a backpack. Freshman Cami Matthews said, “It’s such a relief to not have to go to my locker, like, every two bells. It’s really nice.”

Freshman Victoria DeBrosse’s puppies are pictured at one week old and them now. They are learning and experiencing things for the first time, which can be very exciting. “They’re all opening their eyes and ears now, so they don’t know voices, they don’t know sounds… So my role is to hold the puppies, make them feel comfortable… and then make sure that they’re getting used to new stuff,” said DeBrosse.

IMPEACHMENT INVESTIGATION. On Sept. 24, Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will be launching an investigation regarding potential unconstitutional acts of the president. Six committees will continue investigating until they find enough evidence to issue the articles of impeachment. “I think the fact that—how speaker Nancy Pelosi hasn’t yet in three years tried to impeach...The fact that she’s doing it now means there must really be something—some solid evidence that could lead to a House impeachment,” said Ms. Hodel, SHS AP government teacher.
