Maya Bierhoff, Deputy Design Editor

Hey! My name is Maya and this is my fourth year in the journalism program. I am the Deputy Design editor, and I am so excited to work on The Leaf this year. I joined journalism during freshman year in high hopes of a new adventure, and have since then fallen in love with the rewarding feeling that writing for The Leaf gives me.

One thing that really sums me up is a bookworm. A Taylor Swift, coffee, and Clairo loving bookworm. Some of my favorite books include the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, Pride and Prejudice, Six of Crows, The Hobbit and the Priory of the Orange Tree. Books are a wonderful escape from reality that has kept me entertained since the 1st grade. My current feat is reading the first two Twilight books in one day because they really interested me. I never finished the series, however, solely because I did not like Jacob’s character. Whoops.

Some fun facts about me include: I am scared of heights, I am scared of bridges over water, and I do not like most elevators. They all kind of tie in together with my fear of falling and anywhere up high, so a heads up to any new friend is to leave me behind when they climb Mount Everest. If you are still reading, thanks.

Maxwell Taylor, 11, a “Future Friday” session teacher, hosted an “Art and Animation” class. “I thought animation was [a hobby] that I could teach, and that people tend to gravitate towards,”  said Taylor, “I thought it would be fun to teach people who would like to learn it”.

PART OF YOUR WORLD. Recently, the wonderful theatre program at SHS put together the COVID-19 friendly version of The Little Mermaid Jr in a makeshift outdoor theater. Bringing the classic film to our very own backyard, this show tells a story about reaching for your dreams and never giving up. While it may have been a bit more of a struggle for students to perform this year, the show certainly did not lose any value due to coronavirus restrictions—the show was a blast, full of outdoor excitement and props.

VACCINATIONS. Almost all SHS staff members have been fully vaccinated, and as we are taking steps toward a healthier school experience, we can’t help but celebrate this victory after a year of so much uncertainty. Read below for more!
