Graduation time has the power to stir up a wide range of emotions, and this year was certainly no exception for our seniors right here at SHS. During this transitional and emotional time, seniors may be thinking about their next chapter in life, whether it may be the military, developing a trade, taking a gap year, or heading off to college to continue their educational journey. Others may reflect upon the people who helped them arrive at where they are today. In addition, seniors may ruminate over the support from family and friends over the years; the good times and the bad. But nothing makes them think more about their younger years than the annual Senior Walk.

Sophomore Kendra McPherson sporting an orange “I got my COVID-19 vaccine!” sticker after receiving her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. “It is exciting to be on my way to being fully vaccinated! I am the youngest person in my family so lots of our summer plans revolved around when I would be fully vaccinated, so it is a relief to get my shot sooner than expected. As people continue to get vaccinated it will be nice to see a little bit of a return to normalcy,” McPherson said.

RAINBOW FOR EQUALITY. Anyone who has done much research about the LGBTQ+ community has most likely heard of the Westboro Baptist Church, described by the Washington Post as “cult-like” and “homophobic. They are known for protesting soldiers’ funerals, being anti-semitic, and promoting the death penalty for LGBTQ+ Americans. However, just across the street from the church is a house that has been dubbed the “Equality House.” The house is painted rainbow and is a resource center for Planting Peace, a global organization that promotes peace and equality. CURTAINS UP. Last week, New York governor, Andrew Cuomo, announced that for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Broadway auditoriums will open at 100% capacity this fall. According to Cuomo, “Broadway is a major part of our state’s identity and economy, and we are thrilled that the curtains will rise again.” Link in bio to find out more about the reopening!

HELP INDIA BREATHE. Right now, India is dealing with a coronavirus catastrophe, losing one life every five minutes. This cannot be something that you frown at and then go about your day and ignore. The international community, including each and every one of us, needs to act and make up for lost time. Photo courtesy of Pexels.

19.56 MILLION. That is the number of COVID-19 cases reported in India during this pandemic. Read that again. 19.56 million lives, 19.56 million beating hearts, 19.56 million people like you and I, all forever changed by a virus they had not even heard about before last year. If that number has not already made you raise a brow, let me tell you that over 300,000 of those cases in India have been reported in the last 24 hours. In a single day. From the time you read this to tomorrow, hundreds of thousands more people will have become part of this statistic. According to CNN, “India is now the epicenter of the worst ongoing coronavirus outbreak, and the situation there could get worse before it begins to get better.” Luckily, even with the 8,000 miles physically separating the US and India, you can make a difference. How? By donating to Breathe India, a fund currently dedicated to sending oxygen concentrators directly to patients in India. TAKE ACTION. For most of us growing up, homelessness and poverty are things that we have not had to worry much about. However, some are not so lucky. According to the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, “3.5 million Americans experience homelessness each year.” However, ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, that number has been on a rise. FASHION FOR THE CURE. On Thursday, April 22, Fashion For the Cure committee members, models, and designers gathered at the Dragonfly Foundation’s headquarters. They had a photo shoot in order to showcase the work of the student designers and celebrated surpassing this year’s fundraising goal, donating over $26,000 to the Dragonfly Foundation. Despite not being able to have a fashion show due to the pandemic, the FFTC committee found creative ways to raise money for the organization. “It’s definitely far from what I expected for my final year with Fashion For the Cure but I am so grateful I still had the opportunity to work with some of the most kind, inspiring, and creative girls to support the kids at Dragonfly,” said Grace Zhang, 12, co-chair of the FFTC committee.
