Hey, everyone. I’m Maddie, and this my second year taking journalism. I like writing for the opinion section best, which I’m actually pretty good at, despite being only a staff writer. Aside from journalism, I love music, movies, reading, writing, drawing, coloring, acting, daydreaming, horseback-riding, and Taekwondo. I am currently writing a young adult fiction book I hope to publish one day, if I decide to become an author. It is about a group of teens who accidentally rediscover ancient powers in special necklaces, and then are hunted around the world by rival secret organizations that aim to create two different utopias, but are likely going to destroy everything in the process. On weekends and over breaks, I like to hang out at home, because school wears me out. I also like to go and do things with friends, read a book, watch a movie, and go to my church’s sunday school and and youth group. My favorite series is Maximum Ride, by James Patterson. The series tells the adventures of a girl named Maximum Ride, also known as Max, and her family, all of whom are human-avian hybrids that are 98 percent human and two percent bird. Each of them have wings and unique abilities that help them survive. Max and her family have to travel the globe stopping villains who aim to kill her and her family, and race against the clock to prevent the apocalypse. Other series I like are The Hunger Games, The Unwanteds, Harry Potter, and all of Rick Riordan’s series. My favorite movie is either Guardians of the Galaxy or Big Hero 6, because I love action movies. I am hoping the producers will come out with sequels for both movies. I am also deciding to create a blog on my opinions on Blogger. For now, you can find me on Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook.

The chocolate cake, with the message “Be Mine” on it, combined with the bouquet of roses is one popular common tradition among couples on Valentine’s Day. However, some prefer to be more original and present their lovers with more weird but thought provoking gifts, such as a cheeseburger hat and edible underwear. Some countries also practice interesting Valentine’s traditions, such as presenting your Valentine with an intricately carved wooden spoon in Wales, or having “Black Day” on Apr. 14 for single people in South Korea.

This is Jesse Kidder, a rookie police officer in the New Richmond Police Department. He has been receiving a lot of attention and praise lately from colleagues, reporters, and strangers for refusing to fire on a charging suspect demanding to be shot. Kidder’s restraint spared the suspect’s life, even though his chief said he would have every right to pull his trigger. Photo courtesy of Maddie Schramm.
