Hi! My name is Sara Margolis. I am a senior at SHS and this is my third year in journalism. Being in journalism has helped me grow as a writer and as a person. During my first year on staff I was a staff writer, writing articles about everything from the Golden Globes to Fashion for the Cure. My second year on staff,  I was the Arts and Entertainment Columnist. And this year, I am an Art/Photo Editor. My favorite food is Ice Cream (especially Buckeye Blitz from Graeters) and I could eat it everyday if I was allowed. I also am a huge Dance Moms fan, and you can oftentimes find me wishing I could dance as well as they could. My favorite color is orange or army green-it changes daily. Outside of my extracurriculars, I love to spin and spend time with my family and friends. When I was little my dream job was to be Hannah Montana but surprisingly things have changed and now I spend a lot of my time with kids because I would love to be a middle school history teacher. This past summer I was a counselor at the sleepaway camp in Wisconsin I used to attend. It was my eighth summer there and I was there for nine weeks while serving as a counselor to the cutest nine year olds ever and being a lifeguard. Additionally I  volunteer as a tutor at Operation Give Back, which is a non profit organization for students in my school district who need support. I also work at the daycare at the Mayerson JCC, as well as being one of the Leaders Young Family Community Events at my temple. I also babysit. One of the exciting things that I am doing this year is an internship with the Teaching Professions Academy (TPA) at my school. I am involved in school activities as well, such as National Honor Society, PEERS (The Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) and Bedtime Bundles, which is a drive I co-founded that collects pajamas, socks, and underwear for inner city children. Journalism has allowed me to gain skills that I will use for the rest of my life.

Senior Anna Enriquez participated in Cabaret this year. “I’ve been in Cabaret for all of my four years of high school and I have enjoyed it more and more every year. It’s a very relaxing evening filled with lots and lots of talent. I loved getting closer to people in choir and discovering so many unique aspects of everyone," Enriquez said.

TEACH AND LEARN. The Sycamore Teaching Professions Academy (TPA) is a class SHS offers for students who want to work with children in the future. The class is for students who want to be teachers, go into social work, something with pediatrics, therapy and more. Seniors take two bells worth of TPA and go off into the community and student teach or shadow a professional. “Taking TPA has been my greatest choice of high school! I have learned so much about education, which has not only prepared me to be a better teacher but has also helped me become a better student. TPA has been an incredible foundation to build this dream upon!” said senior Mallory Comerford.

The Sycamore Aves Varsity Diving team is preparing for their next meet which will be the GMC meet. Senior Taylor Miller has been diving for her whole high school career. “I love diving. It is so much fun. I was a gymnast for 14 years and the transition from gymnastics to diving was easy. Diving is not as much of a high-stress sport as gymnastics was, so it is very chill,” Miller said. Miller ended her competitive gymnastics career this year.

Without swimming I cannot imagine where I would be, and I can’t imagine going into college without it being a part of my life,” Carl said.

WE ARE FAMILY. The SHS Tennis Program reminds the Sycamore Community of what it means to have good sportsmanship while still playing the game. Junior High Spanish Teacher Michael Teets is the coach of Boys and Girls Varsity Tennis. The boys were 2016, 2015, and 2014 GMC Championships. The girls were 2014 (gold team) and 2012 GMC Champs. In addition, multiple players have gotten awards such as double champions or runner up. Sycamore Tennis has never disappointed. “Being part of the tennis team is great because you always know that someone will be there to cheer you on during a match or someone to talk to during school since we are like one big family.” said senior Edward Wade.

“Hamilton” is the show-stopping Broadway musical about ten-dollar Founding-Father Alexander Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda created the show that has won 11 Tony’s, one short from the record. The show was inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton. Miranda wanted to create a powerful statement with his musical by casting minorites. In recent news, a “Hamilton” mixtape is coming out, including artists such as Chance The Rapper, Sia, Kelly Clarskon and many more.
