I’m a senior at SHS. This year, I’ll be working as The Leaf magazine’s editor-in-chief. After four years on staff, I have learned a tremendous amount about writing, design and leadership. Some of my interests include sports, Spanish language and culture and reading. My iPhone is full of songs by Drake, Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran, and my room also doubles as my own library stacked with books written by Sharon Draper, Maya Angelou and Ernest Hemingway. I play Girls Varsity Basketball for my school, and I am a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan. Journalism has always been my favorite class, and although I plan on studying engineering in college, I hope to continue my passion for writing and designing after my time here at SHS. Reflecting on my high school career, joining journalism was the best decision I have ever made. During my last year on staff, I am excited to continue to serve as the voice of the student body and will cherish all the knowledge and friendships I gained from Journalism (Convergence).

Police surround peaceful protestors in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio after the Michael Brown verdict. The decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson initiated disputes all over the world, including Cincinnati. SHS teacher Meredith Blackmore led a classroom discussion on the matter, encouraging the students to form their own views and defend all sides of the story.

The film Documented tells the story of an American revealing to the public that he is actually undocumented. The story distinguishes the difference between an illegal immigrant and an undocumented American. It will be hosted by CHS classes on Jan. 15.

Handing the ball off to a teammate, quarterback Shane Morris leads the Michigan offense in a game this season. Morris suffered a mild concussion in a game on Sat. Sept. 27, but was not taken out of the game immediately due to insufficient medical examination. This event has sparked debate over concussion regulation is all levels of football, and will continue to be examined throughout the current season.

Lining the front railing, SHS seniors led the rest of the USA-themed Ave Cave at their first football game against Walnut Hills. The Crosstown Showdown experienced a long rain delay, but that did not deter the Aves from victory, as they defeated Walnut 28-20. SHS is undefeated with a 1-0 record, and will take on Ryle at home next Fri. Sept. 5 at 7:30.

These parents have lost sight of what is really important to the kids, and have forgotten that their children can take away more than just trophies from their experiences in youth athletics.
