WATCH ME. Oprah Winfrey won the Cecil B. DeMille Award celebrating lifetime achievement, the first African American woman to do so. “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again,” Winfrey said in her acceptance speech, according to CNN. GOODBYES. Obama gives her final speech as first lady on Jan. 6, 2017 to a group of school counselors as a part of her Reaching Higher Initiative program. Throughout her eight years in the white house, she has worked to empower and encourage young people to improve the world. This speech was no different, with her reminding them that the country is theirs and with hard work and a good education they can do anything.

SCAT. In Louis’ golden years, he preformed globally. He had multiple performances a night that were high energy and included bits of fast paced sounds called skit scatting. Other performers tried to outperform Louis and often ended up splitting their lips. On occasion, Louis found himself with a split lip as well. “In England on the stage, my lip split, blood all down in my tuxedo shirt, nobody knew it.” Louis Armstrong.

The Black Lives Matter Movement is often connected to the work of Malcolm X. Although he was killed decades before this movement began, his ideology encouraging blacks to defend themselves against white oppression in some ways resemble the BLM mission. He left a significant legacy in the African- American community, calling for empowerment and civil rights.

“Hamilton” is the show-stopping Broadway musical about ten-dollar Founding-Father Alexander Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda created the show that has won 11 Tony’s, one short from the record. The show was inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton. Miranda wanted to create a powerful statement with his musical by casting minorites. In recent news, a “Hamilton” mixtape is coming out, including artists such as Chance The Rapper, Sia, Kelly Clarskon and many more.
