Hello!
My name is Sydney Evans, and I am a fourth-year member of SHS’s journalism program. I was originally introduced to this class by my sister and after my freshman year, I fell in love.
Since my freshman year, I have been a leader in the class, taking on the role as an editor my sophomore year. I have been an editor for the website, The Leaf, and finally The Leaflet. I absolutely love to design and create cool, new infographics and learn new techniques on the Adobe programs.
I am also a Varsity water polo player and have been for the past two years, which is coincidentally also the same amount of time I have been playing the sport.
In my free time, I love to draw and have even been able to incorporate this passion into my journalism career as the staff cartoonist.
I also love working with my older sister, Taylor, to make drawings of characters and scenes from her novel to help promote her work and inspire others to be creative.
I hope to have a career in astrophysics after graduating college and I look forward to my senior year and everything I will get to experience afterward!

RACIAL TENSION. One of the community members who came to the board meeting wore a shirt with the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ on the front. The person told The Enquirer that they received many looks of disgust. This once again hints at the racial tension that is building within our neighboring community.

PROGRAM. Juniors Nick McDonough and Phil Bryant work on their robot during first Aves bell. Both students have a love of Computer Science and Programming, and although Bryant is new to the club, he has had experience building computers on his own; furthermore, he was a member of his old school’s Science Olympiad Team. “I build computers as a hobby, but I've not really done robotics, so it's nice being able to come in and being able to work during Aves bell,” Bryant said.

THINK. Office Paul Payne and other firemen and police officers alongside SHS student simulated a car crash. After cutting doors off of cars and taking the “injured” students away in ambulances Officer Payne performed tests on R J Barnes, the student playing the drunk driver. Officer Payne ended the demonstration, talking directly to the students and emphasizing how important it is for students to be safe and use their seat belts for their intended purpose- to save lives.

IT’S AN HONOR. Former U.S. president, Barack Obama gives Katherine Johnson the presidential medal of freedom in 2015. The presidential medal of freedom is the highest civilian honor that a U.S. citizen can earn. Katherine received it because of her significant contributions to NASA, particularly her calculations for America’s first human spaceflight (with Alan Shepard).

WE THE PEOPLE. Created by Shepard Fairey, the same artist who created the “HOPE” posters, these posters popped up in every march. They depicted different minorities such as Muslims, Latinos, and African Americans. “After this divisive campaign season with it’s fierce policies and statements aimed at women and minority groups, it was important to show the world and our country that there are still so many citizens who care about protecting the rights of all people,” said Jacob Spiegel, 12.
